Climate, Health, and I-1631

Click here to RVSP and get address!

Our local communities have already seen the consequences of a changing climate: last summer, smoke from wildfires hung thick in the air. As advocates for health, we know that taking action on climate will yield immediate health benefits - and we must act quickly.

Now, we have a chance to lead the fight for clean air, clean energy, and stronger communities in Washington. The people of Washington are moving forward with Initiative 1631, the Protect Washington Act. This initiative will create local jobs by investing in clean energy, healthy forests, and clean water. We can accelerate Washington state’s transition to clean energy, increasing the resiliency of our state’s waters and communities to the impacts of climate change, with a fee on the state’s largest corporate polluters.

Our broad-base, diverse coalition developed our policy with a united front of organized labor, environmental advocates, communities of color, faith communities, sovereign tribes and many others. As the lead health voice in this coalition, the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy, WPSR is going all-in.

But first, our initiative must qualify for the November ballot. We have 12 weeks to gather over 300,000 signatures from Washington voters. This past weekend alone, health professional members of our Climate & Health Task Force collected 500 hundred signatures. And we're just getting started!

Join us on May 2nd, at 5:30pm at at a WPSR board member's home in Seattle's Laurelhurst neighborhood (RSVP below for address) to learn more about our work in this coalition, the policy, and the work ahead.
